Bragg-Mitchell Mansion
8" x 10" 200 In Edition
This beautiful old Southern mansion was built by Judge John Bragg around 1855, and in form is that of the Greek Revival; however, its details are of the Italianate style, which was very popular in those days. Judge Bragg was the brother of Confederate General Braxton Bragg, who often visited his brother at the mansion. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Mitchell acquired the property in 1924 and made it their home for a number of years. In 1980, the Mitchell Foundation donated the property to the Explore Center, Inc. for purposes of building an Exploreum museum complex on the grounds. The mansion is currently being used as a showcase of Southern architecture, and features guided tours, in addition to providing reception services for weddings and special events. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
