Apollo
8"x 16" Edition of 200

Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Etching Apollo

The fast steamer "Apollo" was built in New York in the 1890's. Brought down the Atlantic Coast to Mobile in 1894, she began service that same year between Mobile and the Eastern Shore. For the next two decades, along with the "Bay Queen" and the "James A. Carney", the Apollo became one of the best known of the Mobile Bay pleasure boats, hosting thousands of day and evening excursions, and regularly featuring George Tremer, the famous blind pianist, on Sunday afternoons. The Apollo was serving as a ferryboat when the hurricane of 1916 struck Mobile Bay. Although she was washed ashore and suffered severe damage, she was one of the few vessels to survive the storm. Within forty days, the Apollo was back in the water, but in 1920 she was laid up by her owner, the Fairhope Transportation & Excursion Company, and shortly was replaced by the Bay Queen.
