Admiral Semmes' House
10" x 8" 200 In Edition

This charming house of Federal style at 802 Government Street was built about 1859.  In 1871, the house was purchased by the citizens of Mobile and presented to the distinguished retired admiral of the Confederate States Navy, Raphael Semmes.  The cast-iron gallery and deck, along with its cast-iron steps and railing, are believed to have been added to the house in the 1870's, a mute testimony to a time in which decorative ironwork was being used in place of wood.  The house was restored in 1946 by Mr. & Mrs. J.L. Bedsole, Jr.  It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
